Large-scale outdoor performance
In the middle of the square stands a massive tower – a last stronghold bastion of the old theatre,- the buffoon market spectacle, which is disappearing under the rush of the contemporary “avant-guard” conception art.
A tall tower, papered with the old playbills, looks like a card house. It is decorated with tarnished gold, designed with harlequins and circus elephants; to put it more precisely – with skeletons of the elephants, as if they were exposed by the X-rays. So the performance is a peculiar roentgenogram of the grotesque.
Traditional inhabitants of the card house – Polichinelle and Pierrette – an Actor and an Actress – the Comedians. They take a thick round of the spectators as an army, which is laying siege to them. The audience suddenly find themselves turned into the forces, besieging the theatre bastion.
Here the war starts.
Last Bastion is a funny provocative performance. The audience is fired upon with the catapult. The characters build barricades, try to desert, put out a white flag, and again fight for their frail colorful stronghold – the last bastion.
The performance researches the problems of the inner aggression, the sham borders put by people. By the highest standards, it learns eternal relations between the audience and the actors.
As a real buffoonery, the performance is full of sudden tricks and mythical creatures, like the Minotaur, who symbolizes the irrational in the theatre.
This is the story about “in” and “out”. Inside fancy Pierrette could hide a malicious hooligan. People now have to defend not from outside forces, but from the self-contradictions. Without solving them is impossible to save the last bastion.
Nevertheless, the show is funny and excitable, intellectual and buffoon, bright and grotesque. Suitable for the general public.
